Sorry I've been so off the map since my departure! Our orientation has been chock full of activities - from getting to know our way around Rouen, to finding the best bus routes up to Mont Saint-Aignan where Université de Rouen is located, to discovering the intricacies of the consistently delicious jambon beurre.
Pictured to the left, my first ham and butter sandwich on our first day in France. Simple, fresh and delicious, these sandwiches are available at almost every bakery or café in the city. This one was so fresh we watched the owner of the café dash across the street to fetch more baguettes before delivering our lunch to our terrace seats! This particular version is traditionally known as "Un Parisien" as the City of Light is well known to have a magnitude of them available on every street corner. They are similarly easy to find in Rouen, in addition to other varieties of baguette sandwiches including salmon, tuna, turkey, chicken, and good old fashioned cheese.
So far the city has treated us incredibly well. The French have disproven every stereotype I had before departure. Most people we meet are friendly and welcoming - in many cases as excited to practice their English with us as we are to practice our French with them.
Starting on Monday we have classes 4 days a week, with a break on Wednesday (as per French tradition). I'll be sure to stay on top of the blog while we're stationed in the city, and I can't wait to post about the trips we have planned to Normandy, Paris and other parts of the continent I hope to explore.
À Bientôt!
