Tiny French Portions

Just Kidding! I've been told that the Normans are a different breed of French, and therefore don't follow the famed gourmet portion sizes of their more metropolitan counterparts, but the portions I have been receiving in restaurants and at home have been perfect. Not American sized by any means, but appetite sized for sure. Just yesterday Katie and I went out to lunch (meaning a sit down not a quick baguette, although I would certainly be happy eating french sandwiches for the rest of my life) and we couldn't believe how seriously the French take their dejeuner! There are always cheese and desert courses offered, followed by coffee and degestifs, if you so choose.
I ordered a french chef salad and was served smoked salmon, eggs, fresh cheese, and scallops with bits I've never seen before (and hence decided to skip). It was so delicious and filling I could hardly eat dinner that night. To be honest, I don't think Hilar would have blamed me - Mary Paul is out of town visiting her father so we have been fending for ourselves on the dinner front and have had a couple of interestingly arranged meals for sure. All in all though it has been a great first week of classes and I cannot wait to see how the semester progresses now that we are finally down to the nitty gritty of actual schoolwork.
In other food-news - everything you thought you ever new about quick coffee brewing is a lie - - - French Press is Italian!! At least according to Hilar and Mary Paul who chuckled when I mentioned how excited I was to be having French press coffee in France. tehe
